This is a great article about the history of Nikon Cameras — the Japanese company goes all the way to to 1917 and was heavily involved in the development of the first digital cameras and digital photography research projects with NASA in the 1990′s.

A multinational corporation, the Japanese-based Nikon Cameras Company was founded in July of 1917. Originally called “Nippon Kogaku Kogyo Kabushikigaisha,” Nikon was an optical company that came to be when three of the nation’s leading optical manufacturers came together.
